Certification of medical illustrators is endorsed by the Association of Medical Illustrators. The Board of Certification for medical illustrators is an independent body that evaluates and issues certifications to medical illustrators.

The certification marking of CMI is achieved by passing a rigorous testing standard that included medicine, science, business, ethics, and artistic benchmarks for proficiency. Medical illustrators who receive a CMI must demonstrate a continued commitment to education and their skills. Artists must obtain a variety of continuing education credits every 5 years to maintain their certification status.
